How to Store Your Washer and Dryer for Months at a Time

Storing Your White GoodsHave you recently moved home into a new home that already has a washer and dryer? If so, you may want to think about how to effectively store your current white goods, and at American Way Van & Storage, we’re here to help.

Whether you’ve just recently bought a new house or are renting, something that many people don’t consider is that the white goods, such as a washing machine and dryer could be included, however, it’s often the case, especially when it comes to renting.

How to Prepare Your Washer and Dryer for Storage

If you don’t want to get rid of or sell your existing washer and dryer, you’ll want to prepare it properly for storage. Follow the steps below to safely clean and prepare your machines:

  1. Run the empty machine through a normal wash cycle using hot water, but add bleach or vinegar as opposed to your normal detergent. This cleans the machine thoroughly and deeply.
  2. Shut off the hot and cold water supply valves by turning the handles clockwise which can be found at the rear of the machine.
  3. After you have disconnected the machines from the breaker circuit, drain the hot and cold water supply hoses from the valves by turning the threaded hose fitting counterclockwise with a pair of slip-joint pliers. Disconnect one hose at a time, holding it upright to prevent residual water spillage. You may need a bucket handy to drain the water into as it can be a messy process.
  4. Pull out the washer and dryer to allow full access to all sides, and clean all exterior surfaces.
